This is genuinely great climate news! New research suggests the goal of keeping global temperature increase to 1.5C is more achievable than was previously thought. With strong and immediate global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions we can limit warming to 1.5C, a task that has been seen as desirable but unrealistic.
Why is this important? Well, for one, it makes the 1.5C “aspirational” target agreed on by the world’s nations as part of the Paris Agreement in 2015 more realistic. Secondly, it provides impetus for the type of stronger, near-term climate action from governments and businesses around the world that would be necessary to achieve this target.
It’s a big challenge but knowing that it’s achievable will ideally help spur global climate action.
